Never heard of it? Though it seems like a best kept secret, Elimination Communication has actually been practiced worldwide for generations as a method to potty a baby or toddler. It helps decrease, or completely get rid of, the need for diapering. It can be practiced full-time or part-time, and can easily be adjusted for social and culture norms. Whether you’re just curious, or all in, our elimination communication consultants can guide you along this “crazy” EC journey. The benefits of elimination communication are:

This is a modern question that wouldn’t have been asked two generations ago. There was no other option previously. Now that we have access to washers/dryers and disposable diapers the norm seems to have shifted to Potty Training in many countries, to the benefit of diaper makers and the detriment of the environment. But, even today, the benefits of Elimination Communication are great.
EC doesn’t have to be a full-time commitment. It can be done at home only, or during weekdays only, during awake hours only, or for those under age 12-months for small bits of time during a day. You can go at your own pace. You can start and stop if need be.
If you currently think of Potty Training as compressed Elimination Communication, then think of Elimination Communication as the more natural, life-paced approach to noticing the signs and signals of your child’s biological needs to which you can be attentive for the sake of bonding, attentiveness and hygiene. Both can work, but EC typically makes the pottying process an easier integration into the rhythm of one’s day, routine, lifestyle and family. Most children who practice EC are out of diapers at an earlier age, with fewer accidents longer term.
You can practice EC full-time, part-time, daytime only, sneakily on your own :), with friends and family, in a city, in suburbia, at home only, everywhere you go, at a beach, at a restaurant, on the side of the road. We can help cater the EC experience to your family, no matter how much or how little you’d like to try it out.
No. It is responding to a child’s biological need to urinate and have a bowel movement and a human’s preference to be clean. Potty Training is typically done from a standstill to full speed ahead. Elimination Communication is a more consistent, typically more gentle process that doesn’t involve extrinsic motivation (such as M&Ms and stickers). EC is a less abrupt method and creates a sense of normalcy around pottying from a very young age, which typically helps avoid issues of fear, refusal and manipulation over pottying that can often arise from beginning to potty train a child over the age of 2 ½ -3 years old.
No, this is a myth. You can use disposables, or no diapers at all (if you are fully committed and attentive).
Yes! We love consults with families who are new to the idea of Elimination Communication and aren’t sold on the idea yet. We have done both phone and Home Consultations with expectant families using their pregnant time to learn and prepare for the future.
There is no hard and fast rule, but in our years of experience only two 14 to 15-month-olds have potty trained successfully (meaning they can take themselves without accidents at least 75% of the time for both poo and pee). That said, if your child is 16 or 17 months and you have never started EC, it may make more sense for your family to just start with a Potty Training method and realize that there will be a maintenance period (though, don’t expect it to take 2-days to fully potty train a 15-month-old who has never practiced EC).
